Douyin and TikTok, emerging from the same innovative parent company, have rapidly become global titans in the social media realm. Boasting an impressive user base of 1 to 1.5 billion active monthly users, TikTok is hot on the heels of YouTube, which commands a staggering 2 billion monthly users worldwide.
Douyin, on the other hand, has established itself as the undisputed leader in China’s digital landscape, with an incredible 750 million monthly users engaging with the platform. Yet, intriguingly, they’ve evolved into distinctly different platforms. This article will delve into the differences between TikTok and Douyin while discussing the masterful localization strategy that Bytedance enacted for this success story.
The history of Douyin and TikTok
The demographics of Douyin and TikTok
In 2023, TikTok and Douyin, while being counterparts exhibit distinct demographic patterns that shape their content and appeal. TikTok has a global presence in 154 countries, shows a near-equal gender distribution (54% female and 46% male), and is particularly popular among young adults aged 18 to 24. This age group constitutes 21.5% of females and around 17% of male users globally. In the U.S., the platform is notably favored by the 18-19 (67%) and 20-29 (56%) year age brackets.
On the other hand, Douyin is limited to China alone. Its user base is more diverse across age groups but is predominantly composed of young adults (18 to 45 years), accounting for about 80% of its users. This segment is significantly represented in affluent Chinese cities like Shanghai and Beijing.
What's the difference between TikTok and Douyin?
The main difference between TikTok and Douyin is accessibility. Douyin is available exclusively to people in China. Obviously, to natives but also to foreign residents, as long as they have a Chinese phone number.
On the other hand, TikTok is the international version of the platform. It is available in most countries worldwide (with a few notable exceptions like India).
That being said, that’s not the only difference, far from it. When comparing Douyin and TikTok, we can pinpoint four primary areas of distinction:-
User Interface: While both platforms share a highly similar UI, some subtle yet noteworthy variations exist.
-
Content: The types of videos on each platform differ, reflecting varied user preferences and cultural trends.
-
Features: This is where Douyin and TikTok notably diverge.
-
Algorithm: The underlying algorithm of each platform drives different user experiences and content delivery.
1. Douyin vs TikTok: The user interface
-
Top Menus (1): Both applications incorporate top menus that are essential for navigation yet unobtrusive to the viewing experience.
-
Bottom Menus (2): The bottom menus focus on your personal information and customization and video editing without sacrificing screen space for videos.
-
Social Buttons (3): Positioned to the right, these buttons facilitate easy social engagement and are vital to the user interface.
-
Video Information (4): Displayed in a non-intrusive manner, the video information allows users to interact with the content effortlessly.
-
A house icon for the “Home” button.
-
Two stylized partial “stick figures.”
-
A prominent plus (+) sign inside a rounded rectangle is usually associated with creating new content.

2. Douyin content vs TikTok content
The most popular video on Douyin currently captures a spirited snowball fight in Inner Mongolia, showcasing the joy of winter activities. The second-place video features breathtaking winter views of Laojun Mountain in Luoyang, Henan Province. The third spot is occupied by a timely video offering medical advice for the flu season, providing valuable health information to viewers.
With two of the top three videos leaning towards educational content and one offering entertainment, Douyin’s trending list reflects a blend of fun and learning.
In stark contrast to Douyin, TikTok is synonymous with entertainment. The platform is renowned for its viral TikTok Challenges that span a wide array of activities—from dancing to quirky eating contests. These challenges highlight TikTok’s embrace of creativity and spontaneity, fostering a space where unique and playful content thrives.
One standout example is the “Don’t Rush” challenge, illustrated in the videos above. Participants initially appear without makeup and reappear entirely made up, following a swift transition, revealing stunning transformations. This challenge is a testament to the playful spirit of TikTok and its users’ enthusiasm for creative expression.
These platforms also reflect cultural currents in their communities’ beauty trends and standards. At the time of writing—and subject to the rapid shifts characteristic of social media—the Douyin beauty standard has shifted towards the aesthetics of neighboring countries, such as Korea and Thailand. This preference underscores the diverse sources of inspiration that inform what is considered beautiful in different online ecosystems.
On the left, the renowned Chinese influencer 裴幸運 is featured, embracing a Korean-inspired aesthetic highlighting the cross-cultural exchange of beauty trends.
Centered, we have the influencer 一朵鱼, who adopts a Thai-style approach to fashion and makeup, reflecting Thailand’s intricate and colorful artistry. And on the right, the celebrated influencer 今天要不要去吃烧烤 showcases a Westernized look.
Returning to TikTok, its dynamic and diverse community fuels a fast-paced evolution of trends combining beauty with wellness, extravaganza, or plain fun. Let’s take a look at some famous trends.
3. TikTok vs Douyin: The different features
The distinct content approaches of Douyin start to set it apart from TikTok in some remarkable ways. Let’s revisit the home page and take a closer look at the top menu.
Right off the bat, it’s evident that TikTok’s menu opts for simplicity, presenting just four options:
- Live
- Following
- For You
- Search
This minimalist approach underlines TikTok’s dedication to video content, a likely contributor to its explosive popularity. Douyin, in contrast, opens up a world brimming with content options. The menu is a kaleidoscope of choices, each button or option inviting users to explore further.
Fear not—we’ll delve into the details of each page, offering a comprehensive guide to Douyin’s unique features.
Feature #1 - Trending videos
Feature #2 - Douyin live streaming
The available promotions, combined with the appeal of local influencers, lead to regular blockbuster sales numbers. It’s usually a winning proposition for all parties involved. Consumers get curated content they care about with products they are likelier to like. Content creators can leverage their communities to increase their revenue. Finally, companies can get a clear ROI from their advertisement rather than spending it on opaque entities.
Feature #3 - Douyin's mini-Instagram
The third menu option introduces a distinctive twist reminiscent of Instagram or Pinterest. This space is dedicated to photo content rather than video. Users can create visually rich posts with detailed captions, as seen below.
Feature #4 - Geolocation
Although this feature is present in TikTok, it is not as developed as in Douyin. In the Chinese version, aside from presenting you with content from the nearest creators, it allows you to connect and start talking about your favorite content in a swipe. It’s an excellent tool for the extroverted ones and can help build a sense of community.
In our case, we get to enjoy the best Nanjinger content available. But it doesn’t stop here. As you can see in the image on the left (4), a drop-down menu appears when activated. This menu gives you access to one of our favorite features—the takeout menu.
Feature #5 - The Douyin food delivery
Check the images above, and you’ll discover that Douyin is more than just food. Dreaming of a weekend getaway? Booking a hotel is a breeze, with choices ranging from cozy, budget-friendly rooms at $20 to luxurious suites for $250 and up.
And if you’re stuck in town for the weekend, no worries! Douyin’s got you covered with a plethora of fun activities. Just look at the third image. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s on offer:
-
A thrilling day at a gaming house.
-
Horseback riding adventures.
-
Skydiving (yes, really!).
-
Live concerts.
-
Underwater wonders at an aquarium.
-
Thrills and spills at amusement parks.
-
Immersive virtual reality experiences.
-
Chilling at unique cafes – think cats, goats, llamas, dogs, even raccoons!
-
Laughter at stand-up comedy shows.
-
Enchanting evenings at the ballet.
-
Archery for the adventurous.
-
A relaxing spa.
Feature #6 - Douyin e-commerce
Although it could be a coincidence, Douyin’s e-commerce platform is very similar to the leading Chinese e-commerce platform—Taobao. It could be due to UI principles where you want your platform to be something users are already accustomed to using. It’s the same principle that leads to most websites looking like a copy of each other. At least in structure.
Honorable mentions
Feature #7 - Douyin games
This menu doesn’t exist on TikTok, and it brings a lot more content alongside it.
Aside from the gigantic advertisement, you can see several icons that we have taken the time to translate. These features and settings are more or less valuable, but let’s focus on section 2 (highlighted in orange).
We’ve already covered the first few options before (live streaming, takeout, and the activity center), but the remaining 4 are new. Of these, Douyin’s mobile gaming platform is probably the most engaging feature. The remaining ones are:
- Podcast mode
- Netflix
- Karaoke
As a side note, we obviously didn’t translate these terms. Instead, we chose easy-to-understand terms that quickly give you an idea of what these features are all about.
-
The newest games (2).
-
The best-ranked games (3).
-
Game streaming (4).
